Weekend Recap Aug 4-8, 2023

7 games over 5 days on this August long weekend finished up last night with 3 wins, 3 losses and another Div 3 washout.

Action got underway early Friday morning as we started our 2023 40 over campaign against Nova Scotia Avengers CC. After sending them in, they started steadily and accelerated at the end, ending up all out 208 off 37.4 overs. Antony Roche had our best figures with 3/21 in a rare trip to the bowling crease, while Daksh Talwar also took 3 and Zeeshan Ansari 2. The run chase started well reaching 1/72 in the 12th, but nobody could apply themselves for the big score required, 30 from Andrew Irving being the highest. All out 137 in only 25.4 overs was a disappointing effort, and we need to win our 2 remaining games if we wish to defend the cup we won last year. Scorecard

After Saturdays rain wiped out Div 3’s lone game of the weekend, Div 1 took to the field Sunday morning against Halifax Titans CC. Batting first, momentum was hard to find, but Arslan Khan’s best innings as a Cannon (41* off 39) took us to a defendable 133. Titans were cruising at 2/104, needing 30 off 26, but Satnam Singh bowled an amazing 2 overs taking 3 wickets for 4 runs, while Zee (2/13 off 2) and Shadab Ahmed (2/22 off 4) also bowled great death overs to end up winning by 10 after a loss seemed assured. Great effort to fight back in both innings and earn a tough win. Scorecard

Div 2 played the late afternoon game Sunday and Revant Sharan took 3 quick wickets to have us on top. A few missed chances after this allowed East Coast to reach 9/126 off 20. Kanwaljeet Singh also had a good outing with the ball taking 3/16 off his 3. We made a mess of the chase, only Rudy Audikesavalu (23 off 23) and Nihar Shah with a had fought 22 making any score of note as we collapsed to 86 all out in only 15.3 overs, 40 runs adrift of the target. The boys wouldn’t have to wait long to make up for this, up against the same opposition on the holiday Monday. Again bowling first, this time our bowling unit would give us no chance to fail in a run chase by bowling East Coast all out for 89. Our spin trio of Nihar (2/7), Hiren Patel (3/17) and Marshal Bhatti (3/21 off 4) completely strangled the scoring. Despite the great bowling performances, the game will be most remembered for Nisarg Patel taking a club record 5 catches, all of them from the same end, within a few square meters at deep mid wicket. Rudy (33*) and Saravana Kumar Chandran (15*) completed a 7 wicket win after Dhruv Mohta had earlier contributed a fluent 22. Scorecard

Our Div 1 unit were back on the field straight after this, and put up 8/141 off our 20 overs on the back of 51 off 38 balls from Danish Khan, and 35* off 22 at the death from Zee. A welcome return to runs for both of these key parts of our lineup. We picked up both openers in a low scoring powerplay, but Avengers middle order played well and passed our score with 7 wickets and 7 balls to spare. First loss for the season for the team, and we're still on top of the standings. Scorecard

The action would finally come to an end on Tuesday evening with a Div 2 clash against Titans. Losing the toss and bowling first again for the 3rd time in 3 days, Titans got off to a flyer, but the early introduction of spin dried the runs up and saw regular wickets fall. Nihar was the best of our bowlers with 3/19 off 4, with support from Hiren who only conceded 16 off his 4 while picking up a wicket. The first half our run chase was dominated by Priyank Shah with 45 off 39, with his wicket bringing Marshal to the crease. In his first Div 2 knock, he hit the ball hard and everywhere in his 55 off 28 balls (5x4, 4x6) as he brought the target well within reach. A late wobble losing 2 wickets with the scores tied made it interesting, but we got the job done with 7 balls and 2 wickets to spare to move to the top of the standings. Scorecard
