A win, a tie and a washout from this weekend's games.
Div 1 played Saturday against Avengers and started well with the bat, Danish Khan (23 off 15) and Rudy Audikesavalu (42 off 39) putting on 57 for the first wicket. Rudy played his best knock yet in Cannons colours, but his dismissal triggered a collapse of 8/28 to leave us at 9/109 off 17 overs. Daksh Talwar, having been at the other end viewing this carnage, took matters into his own hands in the last 3 overs, adding 32 with Priyank Trevedi (a new club record 10th wicket partnership) and finishing unbeaten on 44. 141 gave us something to defend.
Avengers made a good start, just losing the one early wicket to Shadab Ahmed. Zeeshan Ansari came on straight after the powerplay and put us on top with a 3 wicket spell, reducing them to 5/70 off 12. The topsy turvy nature of this game continued as Avengers built a good partnership, reducing the equation to 27 off 24. Not done yet, Cannons got back into the game courtesy of 2 wickets in the 17th over to Anton Kruger, removing both set batsmen. Avengers had the best of the next 2 overs, an entered the last needing 6 runs with 2 wickets still in hand. Anton was again trusted with the last over, and took his 3rd wicket with the first ball, before Shadab effected a run out next ball. 6 still needed with the last man in. 4 runs would be taken off the next 3 balls, leaving 1 to tie, 2 to win from the last. They scampered a leg bye to tie the game - our second tie this year, both involving Anton trying to defend 6 off the last over.
Div 1's Sunday morning game against East Coast was abandoned due to rain, however the weather cleared in time for Div 3 to play Avengers later in the day. Bowling first, another great team bowling effort restricted Avengers to 8/118 off 20. Opening bowlers Jawad Naimat and skipper Souvik Mitra took 2 wickets each, while Kanwaljeet Singh continued his fine recent form with 2 of his own. Credit to our young gun Tommy Upton who kept things tight during the middle overs conceding only 22 runs from his 4 overs and unlucky not to be rewarded with his own wickets.
The chase did not start well at all, ending the powerplay at 5/32 after 6. A short rain delay would reduce our target to 113 off 18. In need of a stand, Jawad joined forces with Raj Suhagiya and put together one of the best displays of batting seen at Div 3 level. Jawad punished anything loose, smashing 7 sixes on his way to a 26 ball half century, his first time raising the bat for the Cannons. He would finish unbeaten on 59 from 30 balls, and Raj played the perfect supporting knock with 21 not out off 22 balls. Together they put on 85 to take us past the target with 5 wickets and 20 balls to spare. A great win from a team that refuses to give up in any position, and gets rewarded for that more often than not.
