Our Division 3 team provided the highlight of our weekend, getting their first win of 2023 in a last ball thriller over Nova Scotia Avengers CC, while our Div 1 team had a loss.
Bowling first, Tommy Upton and Gurpreet Sidhu took a wicket each in tight opening spells. Once the powerplay was done, spin was introduced, and Maryo John bowled a superb spell taking 3/10 off his 4 overs, while Marshal Bhatti only conceded 10 at his end too, picking up one victim as we had Avengers at 6/36. They fought back putting on 59 for the 7th wicket, before Tommy came back to take 2 in his last over, finishing with great figures of 3/16 off 4. Avengers 8/106 off 20.
The old cricket saying of "if we bat the overs, we will win" was tested to the extreme in our chase. A few guys got to double figures but not much more, and when our 7th wicket fell with 14 balls remaining, we still needed 25. Kazi Rahman in his first hit for the club smashed two massive sixes in the 19th before being run out, bringing the target down to 9 off the last over. A wide and a couple of scampered twos brought it down to 3 off 3 before Richard Upton was caught. Captain Steve Smith batting at the unfamiliar role of 11 hit two from his first ball, leaving us needing one off the last ball with the last man. Maryo at the non-strikers end was alert to the failed mankad attempt, ensuring we would bat the 20 overs, but would we win? Never in doubt as Steve calmly hit one through the off side and wrap up a well deserved victory after a tough start to 2023 for the team. Div 1 batted first against East Coast CC, the first time we've come up against them in the league this year after beating them in the Finals last year. Some promising starts fell victim to run outs, and only Antony Roche (last man out for 31 off 38) dug in as needed. All out for 104 in only 18.3 overs. Our bowling unit tried hard and made it tough for them, but with no scoreboard pressure, they were able to bat with low risk and chase down the runs in 17.1 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets.
