Weekend Recap June 25-26

Weekend Recap June 25-26

A great weekend for the Cannons winning both of our matches in clinical fashion.

Div 1 played defending champs Avengers on Saturday and decided to field first upon winning the toss. Shadab Ahmed and Anton Kruger delivered the goods early taking a wicket each, and with the help of a run out, reducing them to 3/20 in the 4th. Daksh Talwar then followed with a tight spell of 1/12 off 4 overs, while skipper Sagar Mandan also picked up one, and Avengers were still battling at 5/73 in the 13th. They exploded from this point and our normally reliable death bowling conceded some runs, as they reached 6/154 after 20.

A new look opening pair of Danish Khan and our div 2 skipper Dhruv Mohta who was a last minute addition got us off to a flying start, putting on 69 before Danish was out for a well made 34. Antony Roche came in and continued the good work, hitting a quick 25 in another solid partnership of 46. Dhruv then took control, accelerating quickly from 30 to end up with 69 off 49 balls, his first Div 1 50 in a knock where he showed just how well he can bat. His dismissal led to a mini collapse, but the good work early on allowed us to reach their score with 5 wickets and 5 balls to spare, a great chase. Scorecard

Dhruv then backed up on Sunday in Div 2, and after losing the toss and being sent in by East Coast, contributed another good score of 20 in an 84 run opening partnership with Andrew Irving, who hit 56 off 48 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. This partnership, which was more solid than spectacular, but very effective, laid the foundation for a score of 5/137 off 20 overs, with Jaideep Singh putting on the finishing touches with a quickfire unbeaten 13.

East Coast came out aggressive but Jaideep accounted for the first 2 wickets during a spell of good pace. From here, our spin twins of Nihar Shah and Kevin Tuvar took over, taking a combined 6 wickets for 35 runs during the 7th to 14th overs, to leave them faltering at 8/58. They swung lustily at the end but never really threatened our target, as we dismissed them in the 18th over for 101, wrapping up a good 36 run win. Scorecard

Both teams now are in the top 2 of their respective standings and will look to continue their good form next weekend with rematches against the same opposition, while our Div 3 team will also be back in action.
