The Deo Cup wasn't the only action for the Cannons this week, with history made last night as the new field at Don Bayers allowed two Cannons teams (Div 2 and Div 4) to play simultaneously for the first time, keeping fans busily watching it on two screens as our streaming team passed its toughest test yet with flying colors!
Earlier, our Div 4 team had a Saturday morning clash against Titans CC, also at Don Bayers. Our boys struggled to adapt to the new pitch and were bowled out for 64 in 15.2 overs, with Raj Suhagiya top scoring with 14 and Saurabh Tiwari fighting hard for 9. The rain would come and abandon Titans run chase after 2 balls, giving us our first Div 4 points. Scorecard.
They would be back in action last night against East Coast CC. Batting first, we batted the 20 overs for the first time this season, but struggled to score on a heavy outfield, making it to 7/93. Manjul Singh was the key with 30*, and he combined for a 36 run partnership with Amarjot Sandhu (13). At 4/34 and later 7/71 in their innings, we looked to have a great chance at defending the total, but their lower order got them over the line with 3 wickets and 43 balls remaining. Paras Kumar led the bowling with 2/17 from 3, while Tanmay Rajput took 2/28. Two games in a row where we've only been 3 wickets away from victory, it will surely come soon. Scorecard
Div 2 finally saw sunshine in their clash against NS Avengers CC. The started well with the bat, but our attack was able to take regular wickets to restrict them to 6/143 off 20. Left arm spinner Hiren Patel was the best with 3/27 off 4, with Sagar Mandhan making his first Div 2 appearance in 4 years being the other wicket taker. Tommy Upton impressed in his first spell at Div 2 level conceding only 15 from 3 overs, while Ajay Kumar was also economical with 0/19 off 4.
Dhruv Mohta came out looking to attack and hit 27 off 13 to get us off to a good start, but the top order didn't stick around long and at 6/68 off 10, our bowlers had a lot of work to do with the bat. Revant Sharan entered at this stage and anchored the remainder of the chase with 14 not out, while at the other end Sagar (18 off 17), Tushar Sehgal (24 off 11) and Hiren (15 off 9) all took the game on, to the point where Hiren's fall left us with 5 runs needed off 7 balls, and last man Ajay joining Revant. A few dots brought the equation to 4 off 2, before Ajay got the length he was looking for and smashed a 4 through mid wicket to bring us home, a memorable way for him to score his first runs for the club! A special first win for the team this year. Scorecard
